How to properly install a ZoneOrchestrator upgrade.
Before downloading any ZoneOrchestrator file, ensure that you disable any anti-virus programs or firewalls you may be running. They should be disabled during the downloading and installation of ZoneOrchestrator to prevent file corruption. Ensure that, once the installation is complete, you re-enable said protection. This will help prevent malfunctions, and ensure an optimal installation experience.
Patches usually update an earlier version of ZoneOrchestrator to the latest public build. Patches are usually available from the ZoneOrchestrator home page:
If a newer version of ZoneOrchestrator has been releases, the appropriate patch will be listed on the main page, or you view the latest build here.
Download the patch to an easily accessed location, such as my documents.
Double-click (by default) the patch to install it.
Read and reply to any necessary dialogs, then wait as the patch updates ZoneOrchestrator.
Congratulations! This should have successfully updated your ZoneOrchestrator core files. Assuming you have successfully installed the update, you may now delete the initial update file.
If you experience any problems with installing the update, it is highly recommend that you post to the newsgroups. This will allow us to personally help you, as well as alert us to any possible trends.
How to reinstall ZoneOrchestrator following catastrophic file corruption.
Open your control panel.
This is usually accessible through the start button or 'My Computer'.
Click on Add/Remove Programs.
Scroll down to ZoneOrchestrator, and click on 'uninstall'.
You may have multiple copies of ZoneOrchestrator. Uninstall all copies you find (in the add/remove dialog of the control panel). It may be necessary to repeat the above steps multiple times to ensure removal of all prior versions. It is best to start after you are certain that all previous version of ZoneOrchestrator are uninstalled.
Navigate to your ZoneOrchestrator Log Folder (by default, this is C:\Program Files\ZoneOrchestrator\logs), and delete the following files so as to rebuild the log database upon install:
hist.dat
hist.fnl
hist.idx
hist.zip (if it exists)
Note: The above files are hidden by default, so you may be required to modify your view settings to display hidden files.
Once you have removed all versions of ZoneOrchestrator, restart your computer if you
have not already done so.
After the restart, it is recommended that you use this opportunity to disable your virus
scanner so as to ensure download integrity. Some virus scanners can corrupt the download,
and can cause problems during download.
Initiate your Internet connection as necessary, and navigate to the ZoneOrchestrator home page:
Locate the latest complete build of ZoneOrchestrator, and download it.
Navigate to the download location and proceed to install ZoneOrchestrator.
Follow the installation prompts to tailor the ZoneOrchestrator installation to your needs.
You may be prompted to restart your computer at the end of installation. It is advised you do as recommended.
Once installation, and reboot, is complete, you may launch ZoneOrchestrator from any one of the potentially numerous shortcuts it places.
If you encounter any problems, or have further questions, please do not hesitate to post on the newsgroups for further advice.
Activating the Sysop Activity List
Note: The Sysop Activity list only works with level 4 privileges. You must be a level 4 Sysop in order for the Sysop activity list to function.
To activate the Sysop Activity list, try the following steps:
Load ZoneOrchestrator, and log in.
Click on Tools, then select the Options dialog.
Click on the Enhancements tab.

In the Boot/Gag List section, ensure that both boxes are checked.
Click OK to dismiss the Options dialog box.

To ensure that the Sysop Activity window is being displayed, click on View, then Sysop Activity.
The instructions above should force the Sysop Activity list to refresh upon entry in a lobby and auto-refresh at the appropriate intervals.
Using ZoneOrchestrator with Norton's Personal Firewall
If you experience connectivity issues with NPF (Norton Personal Firewall), please do not assume it is the Firewall proper. Symantec has been incorporating methods to protect us from spy ware invasion and unauthorized private information extraction. In NPFs zealousness to protect your system and personal information, it aggressively interacts with information transference between your PC and the sites you wish to connect with.
Therefore, it is necessary to disable the privacy control.
Right click on the little green firewall ball located in the lower right hand corner (systray):

Then, click on Norton Internet Security:

Search for the privacy control tab and disable it. The location shall vary depending upon your version of Norton Personal Firewall, however, your ultimate goal is to locate and disable (completely) the Privacy Control in order to allow ZoneOrchestrator to connect.
Product specific information on disabling privacy control can be found here:
Special thanks to +Dolphie in regards to the identification of this issue, and the submittal of her solution.

Update (2004-09-12)
While 2.0.2.0 has addressed this error, you may encounter difficulties in configuring ZoneOrchestrator to your specific preferences, such as echoing only ZOMessages to the active lobby (with ZM's only echoing to the console, and not the active lobby). This issue is currently being investigated for improvement.
Special thanks to both Jon (work-around) and +Dolphie (testing) for the help provided.

Server Announcement: Information about port 55468 UDP
Upon connecting to ZoneOrchestrator, you may receive the following dialog concerning the forwarding of port 55468 UDP.
This informative message relates to the live server feeds present in current ZoneOrchestrator builds. This technology, which powers ZoneOrchestrator issues, ZoneOrchestrator messages, and server broadcasting, is designed to provide immediate notification to all connected ZoneOrchestrator users, provided that the above port is enabled.
It is not necessary to open this port to receive notifications, broadcasts, and issues - you will receive them regardless of whether this port is open. The difference lies in the speed you in which you shall receive them. With the necessary port open, they shall be received immediately, whereas with the port closed, it may take longer to download notifications.
Due to the number of different firewalls and routers, we are unable to offer specific instructions on the configuration of such devices or programs. However, you are encouraged to post to the technical newsgroups for specific instructions.
If you are familiar with configuring your firewall or router, the following port must be opened for instant issues and broadcasting:
55468 UDP
Note: As previously mentioned, it is not necessary to open this port to receive specific instructions. For more information, please review the above details.
